Artist’s Statement

Sculptor Philip Cuttell

My interest and motivation to paint stems from a desire to express something of the particular precarious predicament of being human. We all dwell in a body which through expression and deportment says a lot about who we are and how time and experience has affected us. It fascinates me that the addition of a millimetre mark to a face can completely change the mood expressed, and also affect the likeness to the sitter profoundly, as we are all minutely attuned to pick up these clues from the cradle. A painting, by it’s selection of composition and expression built up over many painting sessions, can say more about this than any photograph which can only ever record an instant. Hockney talks about a painting being an account of looking over time. There is real magic in smearing pigment suspended in oil on a flat sheet of cloth and have it eventually sometimes abruptly animate and become instead a person. It matters to me to be following a practice which has existed since at least the 14th century, and the challenge is to paint in a way which is informed by the great painters of the past, yet contains an awareness of influences from Modernism and Post Modernism. This search will continue as long as I paint and will never be satisfactorily solved. This is both the frustration of working in paint but also the dynamo to keep painting.
